Prioritizing CNS Indications for an Incubator’s Portfolio Company

Date: 14 October 2026

Background

A university-affiliated incubator approached CCRM Nordic to support one of its preclinical-stage ATMP portfolio companies. While the company had identified a potential lead indication for its therapeutic platform, it was unclear whether this represented the strongest development opportunity or if alternative indications would offer greater scientific and commercial potential.

To support strategic decision-making, CCRM Nordic was tasked with performing a structured assessment of central nervous system (CNS) indications to identify where the technology had the greatest potential and to provide a data-driven foundation for selecting a lead indication.

CCRM Nordic’s Approach

CCRM Nordic designed a two-stage indication prioritization strategy combining scientific evaluation with strategic market analysis.

First, we identified and screened approximately 15 CNS indications using AI-supported research, public databases, and internal expertise. Each indication was assessed against predefined criteria, including mechanistic relevance, disease stage dependency, biomarker availability, and unmet medical need.

Following a prioritization workshop with the client, the two most promising indications were selected for deeper analysis. We then evaluated the opportunity and fit of the therapeutic approach within each indication.

Our Contribution

What made our contribution unique was the combination of scientific expertise and commercial insight within a structured decision-making framework. Rather than evaluating indications individually, we applied consistent assessment criteria across multiple opportunities, enabling objective comparisons based on both scientific rationale and strategic potential.

Our work focused on three key areas:

  • Systematic indication screening using AI-assisted research supported by scientific review.
  • Structured prioritization based on mechanistic relevance, biomarkers, unmet medical need, and timing of intervention.
  • Strategic evaluation of shortlisted indications, including competitive landscape, standard of care, differentiation opportunities, and key development risks.

This approach transformed a complex indication selection process into a clear, evidence-based framework for decision-making.

Results and Impact

The project provided the client with a clear, evidence-based foundation for strategic decision-making. The recommendations enabled the incubator to assess whether the portfolio company should continue pursuing its initial lead indication or redirect development toward alternative opportunities with greater potential. The analysis also identified the most critical scientific and commercial questions to address in future research, helping the company focus its development efforts and de-risk subsequent investment decisions.

By combining scientific expertise with strategic market analysis, CCRM Nordic helped strengthen the development strategy for the portfolio company and provided greater confidence in selecting the most promising path forward.
